Palo Alto Athletics | 1/16/2026

Palo Alto High School is pleased to announce the appointment of Ed Tonga as the new Head Varsity Football Coach for the Vikings football program. Coach Tonga is a respected leader with a strong commitment to student-athlete development and brings experience, stability, and a deep connection to the Paly community.
Coach Tonga has served on the Paly Varsity football staff for the past three seasons, most recently as defensive coordinator, and has held a variety of leadership and mentoring roles within the program. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Coach Tonga is a Palo Alto Unified School District employee, serving as a Student and Family Engagement Specialist (SaFE) for Palo Alto High School and Greene Middle School. In this role, he supports students and families across both campuses, strengthening relationships and ensuring consistent access to guidance and support.
“Ed understands that success in football begins with character, accountability, and relationships,” said Principal Brent Kline. “He knows our students, our community, and what it takes to build a program grounded in pride, discipline, and long-term growth. His work as a SaFE specialist further reflects his commitment to being present, accessible, and supportive of our students.”
“I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” said Coach Tonga. “I want to thank Principal Kline, Assistant Principal LaDonna Butler, and Palo Alto High School for their trust and support. It is an honor to lead this program, and I am excited about the future of Paly Football. Great teams are built on chemistry, accountability, and shared goals.”
The Vikings are coming off a season of growth, and the administration, faculty, and booster community are looking forward to supporting Coach Tonga as he begins off-season preparations and spring training.
The Vikings will open the 2026 season at home against Leigh High School on August 28 at the Earl Hansen Viking Stadium. The Paly community is invited to support the Vikings as the program begins this next chapter.
